Ukraine officials reported a fresh wave of Russian attacks overnight, with missiles and drones targeting energy facilities across the country. This comes just days after similar strikes that crippled parts of the power grid.

The latest assault damaged infrastructure in both western and southeastern Ukraine, injuring at least two energy workers. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept most of the incoming threats, with reports of 12 out of 16 missiles and all 13 drones being shot down. However, the strikes still caused significant disruption, with firefighters battling blazes for hours in some regions.

This recent escalation follows tit-for-tat attacks, with Ukraine launching drone strikes on Russian territory. Moscow claims these strikes justify their targeting of Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Kyiv maintains these attacks are a deliberate strategy to cripple essential services and demoralize the Ukrainian population.

The damage inflicted on Ukraine’s power grid since the war’s outset has been substantial. Estimates suggest nearly half of the country’s generating capacity has been knocked out, leading to widespread power outages and hindering Ukraine’s ability to function normally.

The continued targeting of energy facilities raises concerns about a looming humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Disruptions to the power grid could impact essential services like water treatment and refrigeration, jeopardizing public health.
