Two men in the UK have been accused of spying for China. One of them, Christopher Cash, is 29 years old and works as a researcher in the UK Parliament. The other, Christopher Berry, is 32 years old. They’re both charged under a law called the Official Secrets Act.
The police say they gave information to China that could help them, and this is considered a serious crime. The two men were arrested last March. Cash is said to have connections with some Conservative MPs, including security minister Tom Tugendhat and foreign affairs committee chairwoman Alicia Kearns.
The police say Cash’s alleged actions happened between January 20, 2022, and February 3, 2023, while Berry’s alleged actions took place between December 28, 2021, and February 3, 2023.
The police say they’ve been working hard on this case, and after a long investigation, they’ve charged the two men. They’re asking everyone to let the legal process happen without making any comments or guesses that could affect the trial.
The men have been released on bail and are due to appear in court on April 26.
The police also previously arrested two other men in connection with this investigation but released them on bail.
The Chinese Embassy denies the allegations, saying they are false and just meant to harm China’s reputation. They want the UK to stop making political moves against China.
The UK Parliament Speaker and some MPs have said they won’t talk about this case anymore because it could affect the trial, which is called “sub judice.” They want to make sure the legal process is fair.
