Gram Slattery and David Ljunggren reported that shots were fired near President Donald Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Two sources confirmed that Trump was safe after the incident. The shots came from outside the course’s fence line. The Secret Service is investigating the incident that happened just before 2 p.m. Trump had previously been injured in an attempt on his life, and questions arose about the security of candidates before the upcoming November election.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were relieved to hear that Trump was safe. Trump Jr. shared information from local law enforcement about an AK-47 found in bushes and a suspect being apprehended, although this information was not confirmed by Reuters.

According to The Washington Post, Trump was golfing when the incident occurred. Secret Service agents took him to a holding room at the club. As of now, there has been no comment from the Trump campaign. The Palm Beach police will have a briefing on the incident later today.

This incident was the first shooting involving a U.S. president or major party presidential candidate in over four decades. The security lapse led to the resignation of Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle under pressure from Congress. Trump suffered a grazing wound to his right ear, and one rallygoer was killed in the gunfire. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper. The Secret Service’s acting director expressed shame over the security lapse that allowed the assassination attempt to occur.
