The top court in Brazil ordered an immediate suspension of the X platform nationwide on Friday. This comes after a long legal battle with Elon Musk’s social media company over content moderation. The court stated that individuals using VPN to access the X platform would face daily fines of 50,000 reais ($8,900), but it is unclear how they will enforce this rule.

Earlier this month, X shut down its operations in Brazil to protest against court orders demanding the removal of accounts spreading misinformation. The company claimed that Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes threatened their legal representative with arrest if they did not comply with censorship orders. Moraes also warned that Brazil would ban the service if X did not appoint a legal representative in the country.

X’s global affairs team tweeted on Friday morning that they expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes to order the shutdown of X in Brazil because they refused to comply with his orders to censor political opponents. The platform announced that they will publish the top court’s demands and will not comply with them.
