The New York Times analyzed over 3.2 million Telegram messages from 16,000 channels and discovered that the messaging platform has been flooded with illegal and extremist activities.
The Times specifically found 1,500 channels run by white supremacists, two dozen channels selling weapons, and at least 22 channels advertising MDMA, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs for delivery.
The company’s founder and CEO Pavel Durov got arrested in France last month. Authorities claim that Telegram’s lack of content moderation makes Durov an accomplice to illegal activities on the platform.
The platform updated its website to allow abuse reports. Durov has been posting on his Telegram channel, arguing, “Using old laws to charge a CEO for crimes committed by others on the platform is a wrong approach.”
