Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera, the world’s oldest-known person, passed away at the age of 117, as confirmed by her family on Tuesday. Her family shared that she died peacefully in her sleep, as she had wished. Branyas was born in the U.S. in 1907 and lived through two pandemics, two world wars, an earthquake, and a major fire. Despite her old age, she had a sharp memory and did not have any common elderly diseases like cardiovascular issues. Scientists studying her found that she was physically much younger than her chronological age. Branyas, who tested positive for COVID-19 at the age of 113, had a sense of humor and attributed her longevity to living a peaceful life with family, positivity, and nature. She posted life advice on her X account, including the importance of avoiding toxic people. The Gerontology Research Group confirmed her as the world’s oldest person when French nun Lucile Randon passed away. Esteller, the scientist studying Branyas, emphasized the genetic component of her longevity, as her family members also lived long lives. The next oldest person after her is Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who is 116 years old.
