NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh criticized the Liberals and Conservatives for their approaches to fighting climate change while speaking to reporters in Montreal. He did not confirm whether he would maintain the consumer carbon price if his party takes power after the next election. Singh emphasized the importance of a climate crisis strategy that does not burden working people and ensures that big polluters pay their fair share. He mentioned that a plan would be released soon to address these issues.

The Conservatives, on the other hand, have pledged to eliminate the carbon tax introduced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, claiming it contributes to the increasing cost of living. Singh accused Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of not wanting to combat climate change at all. He also attributed the Liberals for creating division among workers by exempting home heating oil from the carbon price, which benefits people in Atlantic Canada.

Furthermore, the NDP, who have previously supported the consumer carbon price proposed by the Liberals, are preparing for the upcoming return to a minority Parliament after ending their agreement with the Liberals. Economists widely advocate for carbon pricing as the most cost-effective method to reduce emissions. Singh’s statements were made on the last day of the NDP caucus retreat before the House of Commons reconvenes on September 16.
