On Saturday, Ukraine and Russia released over 100 prisoners of war. These soldiers were exchanged as part of a deal brokered by the United Arab Emirates. Ukraine freed 115 conscripted servicemen, many of whom were captured during Russia’s invasion. Among them were nearly 50 soldiers taken from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.
On the other side, Russia released 115 soldiers captured in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched a surprise offensive recently. These soldiers are currently in Belarus but will be transferred to Russia for medical treatment.
The exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine takes place during carefully planned meetings. Both countries do not disclose the total number of prisoners of war. According to the U.N., Ukrainian prisoners often face medical neglect and mistreatment, while occasional reports suggest Russian soldiers have been abused during capture.
In addition to the prisoner exchange, there have been recent casualties in Ukraine due to Russian shelling. In the city of Kostiantynivka, five people were killed and five wounded. In Kherson, two people were killed, including a baby. Ukrainian air force intercepted drones, and Russia conducted bombings on Ukranian territory.
Ukraine is marking its 33rd Independence Day amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Poland’s President visited Kyiv to show support for Ukraine. Despite historical tensions, Poland has been a strong ally, providing military aid and support for Ukrainian refugees.
Although trade and historical disputes occasionally strain relations between Ukraine and Poland, the two countries continue to maintain a supportive partnership during these challenging times.
