Portugal has declared a state of emergency due to uncontrolled wildfires in the northern region. The fires have claimed seven lives, including three firefighters who died while fighting the flames.
In response, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro of Portugal has mobilized thousands of firefighters to control the wildfires. He has also ordered immediate assistance for those displaced by the fires. Additionally, he instructed law enforcement to investigate the causes of the wildfires. The blazes have burned approximately 15,000 hectares of land and put around 210,000 people at risk.
The European Union is providing support by sending firefighting aircraft from several member states. Neighboring Spain has also sent troops to assist in the firefighting efforts. Emergency responders continue to battle numerous active fires across the affected areas as the situation remains critical.
