Larry Ellison, the chairman and co-founder of Oracle, made a surprising announcement this week. He told investors that the demand for electricity from artificial intelligence is increasing rapidly. To meet this demand, Oracle is planning to use power from next-generation nuclear technology. Ellison said that Oracle is designing a data center that will need more than a gigawatt of electricity. This data center will be powered by three small nuclear reactors. Ellison mentioned that the location where they plan to build the data center already has building permits for the reactors. Small modular nuclear reactors are a new type of design that aims to provide reliable, carbon-free energy as the demand for power grows from data centers and other sources. Currently, small modular reactors are seen as a technology of the future. Some executives in the nuclear industry believe that these reactors won’t be widely used in the U.S. until the 2030s. As of now, there are only three operational small modular reactors in the world, located in China, Russia, and Japan.
