New Democrats in Montreal are meeting to discuss their plans before Parliament resumes next week. They have distanced themselves from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom one NDP MP called “radioactive.” Last week, the NDP ended their agreement supporting the Liberal minority government. NDP MP Alistair MacGregor, representing Vancouver Island, said people in his area are pleased with the decision to distance themselves from the Liberals because Trudeau’s name is unpopular there.

The NDP caucus retreat began on Tuesday, and MPs like MacGregor are glad the agreement is over. MP Don Davies from Vancouver also supports this decision. He mentioned that the Trudeau government won’t bring the change people need. The NDP caucus is being held in cities where byelections will take place on September 16. They are trying to hold onto a seat in Winnipeg and secure a Liberal stronghold in Montreal. By cutting ties with the Liberals, the NDP hopes to improve their chances in these races. Quebec’s only NDP MP, Alexandre Boulerice, believes that ending ties with the Liberals will benefit the party in both cities.
