Meta blocked a “small cluster” of WhatsApp accounts linked to an Iranian hacking group targeting officials associated with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The bogus WhatsApp accounts appeared to be from the Iranian threat actor APT42, known for cyber espionage. The campaign aimed to exploit political and diplomatic officials, public figures, and activists. Meta’s security team detected APT42’s involvement by analyzing suspicious messages reported by users. The company assured that no WhatsApp users’ accounts were compromised. Microsoft also identified Iranian hacking groups attempting to influence the US presidential election. In 2019, Microsoft linked Iranian government hackers targeting a US presidential campaign.
