Former Bank of Canada governor will advise Justin Trudeau, the Liberal Party leader, on economic growth. The party announced Carney’s new role on Monday. Carney will help shape ideas for Canada’s economic growth strategy, building on the work done by the Liberal government. Recommendations will be shared in a report with the Leader and Liberal Party’s Platform Committee as they prepare for the next election.

Carney’s role is within the party, not in government offices. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland supports Carney’s appointment. They are good friends, according to a senior government source.

Carney will speak to Liberal MPs at their summer caucus retreat in Nanaimo, B.C., focusing on growth and the economy. He will advise Trudeau in this area.

Carney served as Canada’s central bank governor from 2008 to 2013 and was governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He currently works as the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.

The opposition Conservatives have criticized Carney, calling him “carbon-tax Carney.” Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer believes Carney and Trudeau have similar elitist views.

Despite criticism, Liberal sources believe Carney will help them close the gap with the Conservatives in the upcoming election.
