The Staff from The Canadian Press posted an article on August 24, 2024 at 9:27 am. Railway workers, along with their union and employers, are waiting for a decision from the Canada Industrial Relations Board. This decision will determine the next steps in the labor dispute that has halted trains across the country this week.
The federal government has asked the board to implement binding arbitration in the dispute between Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd., Canadian National Railway Co., and their workers. Additionally, the government has requested the board to bring the parties back to work while a resolution is being negotiated.
The board called the parties to a meeting on Thursday night and held a hearing on Friday, addressing the issue with urgency. The Teamsters union has issued a 72-hour strike notice against CN, even as the railway company has begun moving trains again. However, at CPKC, the union has contested the government’s directive for binding arbitration, leading to the continued shutdown of the rail company’s operations as of Friday.
