In the recent 4th round of a special Coffee Tasting Competition, 36 out of 40 winners were from the Sidama region. This competition, organized by the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority in collaboration with the Ethiopian National Coffee Association. The Alliance for Coffee Excellence, featured 40 qualifying farmers who will compete internationally. Held on July 23rd, 2016 E.C. in Addis Ababa, the event attracted 12 international buyers. The winners are expected to fetch high prices for their coffee in an upcoming online auction.
Over the past six months, more than 800 coffee farmers, each with less than 20 hectares of land, competed to qualify, with 150 advancing to the national competition. Participants came from various regions including Jimma, Hawassa, Diredawa, and Addis Ababa.
This special Coffee Tasting Competition aims to boost the market value of Ethiopian coffee products. Notably, in the 2014 competition. Ethiopian coffee achieved a high score of 884 points and sold for $10 per unit in an international online auction.
