A recent theft on a power transmission line in eastern Ethiopia has disrupted electricity along the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway. This incident occurred near Fentale Woreda in Awash Park. As a result, several cities and areas in the east and the power supply to Djibouti have been affected.

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) reported that the outage was caused by the theft of a power pole in Benti Kebele of the Afar region. Mr Alemayehu Zeberga, the operation and maintenance director of Ethiopia for two central regions’ power transmission and distribution stations, confirmed that the stolen pole supported two electric lines.

To address the situation, EEP plans to implement a shift system to provide electricity to affected cities and areas until maintenance is completed. Additionally, nine power poles along the Metehara-Awash 132 kV railway line have also been damaged due to this incident.
