Elon Musk expressed his support for California’s SB 1047, a bill that requires companies creating very large AI models to develop and document protections against those models causing serious harm.
On Monday afternoon, Musk stated, “I believe California should pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill, even though it may not be popular with everyone. I have been advocating for AI regulation for over 20 years, similar to how we regulate other potentially risky products and technologies.”
Musk, whose own company xAI would have to comply with SB 1047’s rules despite his intention to leave California, has previously raised concerns about the risks associated with uncontrolled AI.
In contrast, rival organization OpenAI has announced its opposition to the bill, instead favoring an alternative proposal.
