NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh declared on Monday that Canadians have lost faith in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Singh made this comment to reporters in Ottawa as Parliament resumed after the summer break. Singh criticized Trudeau for allowing big corporate grocery stores to overcharge consumers and big corporate landlords to raise rents. A recent Ipsos poll, released on Monday, indicated that only 33% of Canadians approve of Trudeau and his Liberal government. Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who has been leading in the polls for over a year, is favored by 45% of Canadians as the best candidate for Prime Minister, according to the same Ipsos poll.

Darrell Bricker, the global CEO of Ipsos public affairs, stated that Singh has the most work to do out of the top three political party leaders. Singh stated that the NDP’s focus in the upcoming fall session will be on making housing more affordable, reducing grocery prices and rents, and improving the healthcare system. Singh emphasized a choice in the next election between Conservative cuts under Pierre Poilievre and New Democrats who will strengthen essential programs.

On September 4, the New Democrats withdrew from a supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals. Singh terminated the agreement with the Liberals in a pre-recorded video, citing their failure to fulfill promises and stating that they do not deserve re-election. The agreement, signed by the Liberals and NDP in March 2022, was intended to support Trudeau’s minority government until June 2025 and advance certain agreed-upon policies.

Singh mentioned that ending the Liberal deal may prompt an early election, and the NDP is prepared for that possibility. Poilievre has promised to bring a non-confidence motion against the Liberal government soon and challenged Singh to support it. Singh emphasized that the NDP will assess each motion based on its merits and impact on Canadians, striving to act in their best interests.
