Government data obtained by Reuters reveals that Canada is closing its doors to more visitors and temporary residents. They are approving fewer visas and turning away more people at the borders who have official documents. This spike in rejections comes as the Prime Minister’s Liberal government tries to lower the numbers of temporary residents and possibly permanent immigrants due to issues like a shortage of housing and high prices.
In July, Canada refused entry to 5,853 foreign travelers who were allowed to leave. Border officers turned away an average of 3,727 foreign travelers per month in the first seven months of 2024. This is a significant increase from the previous year.
Separately, officers deemed 285 visa-holders inadmissible in July, the highest number in any month since at least January 2019. There are also reports of increased scrutiny of visa-holders at airports and land border crossings.
The immigration department in Canada is also approving fewer visas and study and work permits. The number of approved study and work permits has dropped from previous highs in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
Overall, there is a shift in attitude towards immigration in Canada, with more scrutiny being applied to individuals seeking entry. It is important for Canada to only grant visas that they plan to honor, according to experts.
