A Brazilian court banned X (formerly Twitter), and this has helped its competitors, especially Bluesky.

Bluesky, a microblogging platform, announced a surge in activity with 500,000 new users joining in the last two days. It is now the number one free iPhone app in Brazil, beating Meta’s Threads.

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber praised Brazil for making the right decision, as the platform experienced impressive growth since its full public launch in February. Despite being smaller than X and Threads, Bluesky had over 6 million users by May 2024.

Originally backed by Twitter in 2019, Bluesky has evolved into an independent public benefit corporation. Twitter founder Jack Dorsey stepped down from the board earlier this year.

On the other hand, Elon Musk’s X has been in a legal dispute with Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for not blocking specific accounts related to election disinformation. X decided to shut down operations in Brazil following the dispute, and Moraes banned the platform, threatening fines for users attempting to bypass the ban with a VPN.

Before the ban, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva directed his X followers to his other social media accounts, particularly Bluesky.
