Benny Gantz, a senior member of Israel’s security cabinet, has threatened to resign from the government if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t adopt a new plan for dealing with the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. This comes after seven months of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, with neither side able to achieve their objectives.
Gantz’s proposed plan for Gaza includes securing the return of Israeli hostages and the remains of soldiers held by Hamas. It also involves ending Hamas’s control over the Gaza Strip, demilitarizing Gaza, and removing the threat of rockets and tunnels aimed at Israel. Additionally, the plan aims to establish an international mechanism to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza and prevent the rearming of militant groups.
Gantz has given Netanyahu until June 8 to accept this plan. If the Prime Minister fails to do so, Gantz has threatened to resign from his position in the government. This would leave Netanyahu more dependent on his far-right political allies, who are likely to oppose any concessions to the Palestinians.
The threat of resignation highlights the growing divisions within Israel’s leadership over how to deal with the Gaza issue. While Netanyahu has pursued a policy of military pressure and economic sanctions, Gantz and others in the security establishment believe that a more comprehensive political solution is needed to address the root causes of the conflict.
However, any plan that involves engaging with Hamas or making concessions to the Palestinians is likely to face strong opposition from Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition partners. This makes it difficult for the government to adopt a new approach, even senior security officials like Gantzn support this.
The situation in Gaza remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation of violence. The threat of Gantz’s resignation adds to the pressure on Netanyahu to find a way to break the deadlock and chart a new course for dealing with the conflict. However, the political realities in Israel make it challenging for the government to pursue a significantly different strategy at this time.
