The White House announced on July 26 that Apple has joined the list of public U.S. companies making voluntary commitments to AI regulations. These commitments were first announced in September 2023 and include promises to disclose AI capabilities publicly and watermark AI content, among other things. They aim to set a standard for the country’s largest AI makers to avoid deception and risky practices stemming from realistic AI content and advanced capabilities. The White House stated that Apple’s addition strengthens these commitments as crucial elements of responsible AI innovation.
On the same day, the White House also announced that federal agencies have completed all the necessary actions in the Executive Order related to AI safety on schedule. These actions include managing risks to safety and security, bringing AI talent into government, advancing responsible AI innovation, and promoting U.S. leadership in AI internationally. The White House report commended the bold actions taken by government agencies to address safety and security risks related to AI, protect privacy, promote equity and civil rights, and advance innovation and competition.
For businesses, these new AI actions may serve as a guide for considering safety and security risks when dealing with generative AI technology. Meanwhile, Apple has delayed the release of its new AI platform, Apple Intelligence, by a few weeks. Developers can access a beta release of iOS 18.1, which introduces Apple Intelligence, this week. Apple Intelligence will offer ChatGPT integration and proprietary Apple AI to enhance Siri’s capabilities. General consumers will have to wait a few weeks after the launch of iOS 18 to access the version with AI features.
